Song of the Day #3,785: ‘thank u, next’ – Ariana Grande

It took the breakup of Ariana Grande’s engagement to land her her first Billboard #1 single. Just minutes before the episode of Saturday Night Live where Pete Davidson acknowledged the unlikely couple’s split, Grande dropped this sweet ode to her exes.

In the first verse, she namedrops her four celebrity mates: Davidson, rapper Big Sean, dancer Ricky Alvarez, and late rapper Mac Miller. She doesn’t specify which taught her love, patience or pain, or why one of the four apparently didn’t teach her anything.

In the second verse, she celebrates her newest love: herself. Apple Music confused matters early on by misrepresenting ‘Ari’ as ‘Aubrey’ in the lyrics, causing legions of fans to believe Grande was coming out as bi. Or perhaps that she was dating Drake, whose real name is Aubrey Graham.

[Verse 1]
Thought I’d end up with Sean
But he wasn’t a match
Wrote some songs about Ricky
Now I listen and laugh
Even almost got married
And for Pete, I’m so thankful
Wish I could say, “Thank you” to Malcolm
‘Cause he was an angel

[Pre-Chorus]
One taught me love
One taught me patience
And one taught me pain
Now, I’m so amazing
Say I’ve loved and I’ve lost
But that’s not what I see
So, look what I got
Look what you taught me
And for that, I say

[Chorus]
Thank you, next (Next)
Thank you, next (Next)
Thank you, next
I’m so fuckin’ grateful for my ex
Thank you, next (Next)
Thank you, next (Next)
Thank you, next (Next)
I’m so fuckin’—

[Verse 2]
Spend more time with my friends
I ain’t worried ’bout nothin’
Plus, I met someone else
We havin’ better discussions
I know they say I move on too fast
But this one gon’ last
‘Cause her name is Ari
And I’m so good with that (So good with that)

[Pre-Chorus]
She taught me love (Love)
She taught me patience (Patience)
How she handles pain (Pain)
That shit’s amazing (Yeah, she’s amazing)
I’ve loved and I’ve lost (Yeah, yeah)
But that’s not what I see (Yeah, yeah)
‘Cause look what I’ve found (Yeah, yeah)
Ain’t no need for searching, and for that, I say

[Chorus]
Thank you, next (Thank you, next)
Thank you, next (Thank you, next)
Thank you, next (Thank you)
I’m so fuckin’ grateful for my ex
Thank you, next (Thank you, next)
Thank you, next (Said thank you, next)
Thank you, next (Next)
I’m so fuckin’ grateful for my ex

[Post-Chorus]
Thank you, next
Thank you, next
Thank you, next
I’m so fucking—

[Bridge]
One day I’ll walk down the aisle
Holding hands with my mama
I’ll be thanking my dad
‘Cause she grew from the drama
Only wanna do it once, real bad
Gon’ make that shit last
God forbid something happens
Least this song is a smash (Song is a smash)

[Pre-Chorus]
I’ve got so much love (Love)
Got so much patience (Patience)
I’ve learned from the pain (Pain)
I turned out amazing (Turned out amazing)
Say I’ve loved and I’ve lost (Yeah, yeah)
But that’s not what I see (Yeah, yeah)
‘Cause look what I’ve found (Yeah, yeah)
Ain’t no need for searching
And for that, I say

[Chorus]
Thank you, next (Thank you, next)
Thank you, next (Thank you, next)
Thank you, next
I’m so fuckin’ grateful for my ex
Thank you, next (Thank you, next)
Thank you, next (Said thank you, next)
Thank you, next (Next)
I’m so fuckin’ grateful for my ex

[Post-Chorus]
Thank you, next
Thank you, next
Thank you, next
Yeah, yee
Thank you, next
Thank you, next
Thank you, next
Yeah, yee

This is her first number one song? Wow!

I didn’t think dropping this right before SNL started was a kind move to Pete, and I’m not sure how I would be feeling about the song if I were Pete or really any of the exes (those that are alive of course).

The song itself is undeniably catchy, and I know Maddie loves it, so she may be weighing in at some point.😊

Thank you for keeping me the smallest bit in touch with what is happening in music right now. I tend to spend most of my time in previous musical decades…

This song is just so brilliantly constructed. The writing skills on this are on par with some of Taylor Swift’s work, and that’s a big compliment from me. It should also be noted (for my dad) that Ariana ran this song by everyone mentioned in it, and they gave their approval before she released it. It’s pretty amazing that Ariana’s been able to balance out this year she’s been having and become a poster child for reflecting, coping, and finding a way to move on from really awful situations.
