Song of the Day #3,784: ‘Masterpiece’ – Pistol Annies

Miranda Lambert’s final solo track on the new Pistol Annies album is her most straight-forward response to date to her divorce from Blake Shelton.

This beautiful ballad explores the end of a relationship that existed entirely in a spotlight. She compares their marriage to a framed painting, a rodeo and a country song — all objects of public scrutiny. She recognizes that, in the general conversation, her love affair was a fleeting diversion: “We’re just another thing they’ll all forget about / They’ll be standing around laughin’ like nothing ever happened.”

Perhaps to remove any doubt that this song is about her own marriage, she name-drops her own song in the third verse. She quotes ‘Still Doin’ Time’ and ‘The King is Gone,’ two George Jones songs, and ‘Stand By Your Man,’ the Tammy Wynette classic. Jones and Wynette were two country superstars briefly married and messily divorced. It’s no accident Lambert chose their songs to reference.

Then comes the coup de grace, as Lambert nods to her own love song ‘Makin’ Plans,’ which she wrote for Shelton years ago and which fellow Pistol Annie Ashley Monroe sang for the couple at their wedding.

It’s interesting that Lambert saved this very personal and poignant track for a Pistol Annies album rather than a solo record. I suspect it’s because, during those difficult times, she found solace in her friends.

[Verse 1: Miranda Lambert]
Baby we were just a masterpiece
Up there on the wall for all to see
We were body and soul, we were talked about
Once you’ve been framed you can’t get out

[Chorus 1: Miranda Lambert]
Who’s brave enough to take it down?
Who’s fool enough to lose the crown?
We’re just another thing they’ll all forget about
They’ll be standing around laughin’
Like nothing ever happened

[Verse 2: Miranda Lambert]
Baby we were just a rodeo
Shining up our buckles for the show
Our knuckles white, we held on tight
‘Cause the longest ride makes the crowd go wild

[Chorus 2: Miranda Lambert]
Who’s gonna open up the gate?
No hope of riding to the eight
We ain’t the cowboys, honey, we’re the clowns
They’re all standing around laughin’
Like nothing ever happened

Oooh
Oooh

[Verse 3: Miranda Lambert]
Baby we were just a country song
I’m still doin’ time, the king is gone
I tried to stand by my man
We were making plans, we were making plans

[Chorus 3: Miranda Lambert]
Who’s brave enough to take us down?
Who’s fool enough to lose the crown?
Maybe another thing they’ll all forget about
They’ll be standing around laughing
Like nothing ever happened

[Outro: Miranda Lambert]
Oooh
Oooh
(Baby we were just a masterpiece)
Baby we were just a masterpiece

  1. Dana Gallup says:

A moving tribute to her failed marriage….not likely to be on heavy rotation in the Stefani household.

Thanks for this song and for your insight into her various lyrical references. Must be extremely challenging to be in the public eye like that!!!
