Song of the Day #3,786: ‘I Got a Line On You’ – Spirit

I recently attended a college football game and was amused by the man sitting behind me, who was more into the classic rock occasionally playing over the stadium sound system than he was into the game.

When the opening notes of The Who’s ‘Baba O’Reilly’ played, he said “Baba O’Reilly. First track on Who’s Next. 1971.”

At one point, he pontificated that the secret weapon of the band Yes was not lead singer Jon Anderson but bassist Chris Squire. You get the picture.

One exchange that caught my attention was his lavish praise of an album by the California rock band Spirit. Based on context clues, I believe he was referring to their 1968 album The Family That Plays Together, which features their biggest hit, ‘I Got a Line On You.’

The man claimed that this is a perfect album — not a single false note.

He also said something about Led Zeppelin overshadowing the more worthy Spirit. Some Googling revealed the Zeppelin connection extends to accusations that the opening of ‘Stairway to Heaven’ was partially lifted from a Spirit song called ‘Taurus.’ In 2014, Spirit lead singer/guitarist Randy California sued Zeppelin, claiming that Jimmy Page had heard ‘Taurus’ when the two bands played on the same bill in the late 60s. A jury found in favor of Led Zeppelin.

Thank you to the random football/music fan for sending me down this rabbit hole, introducing me to a band worth checking out, and giving me great fodder for a Song of the Day.

Let me take you baby, down to the river bed
Got to tell you somethin’, go right to your head
Cause I got a line on you, babe
I got a line on you

Gotta put your arms around me
With every bit of your love
If you know what to do, I’ll make love to you
Cause you got the right line to make it through these times
I got a line on you babe
I got a line on you babe
I got a line on you babe

I got a line on you
I got a line on you babe
You know my winter’s almost over
My summer, she’s comin’ on strong

I can love you, love you, love you
Love you all year long
I got a line on you babe
I got a line on you
I got a line on you babe
I got a line on you
I got a line on you babe

Overhearing that conversation was definitely an amusing part of attending that game.

Meanwhile, I don’t recognize this song, though the title has been used in other songs by other artists (who are probably also being sued).

By the way, the lawsuit with Led Zeppelin is not over. The appellate court recently reversed the jury verdict and ordered a new trial.

Interesting how some folks are so into stuff like this.
