In honor of my daughter Sophia’s 16th birthday, which falls in the middle of this week, I’m offering up five songs by one of her favorite bands, One Direction.
Sophia has many favorite artists, some of which are my favorites too, but this is one that I would almost certainly have never heard in depth were it not for her. And as I’ve discovered, that would have been a shame.
I have featured a quartet of One Direction songs already, including two of my favorites: ‘Night Changes‘ and ‘Story of My Life.’ I chose the five I’m highlighting this week by sampling a whole bunch of fan favorites and picking the ones I like best.
‘Fool’s Gold’ is the sixth track on Four, the band’s fourth album. Credited to the five bandmates along with Jamie Scott and MoZella, it’s a beautiful acoustic ballad that showcases the vocal gifts of these lads.

This is a timely theme week as we were just discussing during our vacation how I was predisposed to write off songs from One Direction, including their solo efforts, given their Simon Cowell patched together reality TV origins and preadolescent fan base. Yet, time and again, I found myself really liking what I was hearing. So, I look forward to hearing more in honor of Sophia’s birthday.😊

Lovely sound and song. I’ve heard the majority of their (non-hit) songs first as performed by CME, as one of Daniel’s band mates has a penchant for all things 1D. Certainly this is a band any parent can be happy to include in the road trip play list!
