Song of the Day #2,545: ‘Night Changes’ – One Direction

1d_night_changesI always had visions of indoctrinating my children in my cultural ways, raising fans of the same music, television and movies that have moved me over the years.

That has happened, to some extent. My daughters enjoy some of my favorites, and we’ve discovered new favorites together.

But the vision of young Elvis Costello and Bob Dylan fans running around the house… it was clearly never meant to be.

What has inevitably happened instead, however, is that my daughters have introduced me to new songs and artists. Increasingly, when unfamiliar songs come on the radio it is Sophia and Fiona who start singing along and saying “Oh, I love this one.”

This week I’ll feature five songs I’ve come to know (and like) thanks to my daughters.

First up is One Direction (or “1D,” as I call them) with ‘Night Changes.’ I actually had several 1D songs to choose from, and I have to day, they’re all pretty good. These guys don’t write their own songs (as far as I know) but they’re collaborating with the right people.

[Verse 1: Zayn Malik]
Going out tonight, changes into something red
Her mother doesn’t like that kind of dress
Everything she never had, she’s showing off

[Verse 2: Liam Payne]
Driving too fast, moon is breaking through her hair
She’s heading for something that she won’t forget
Having no regrets is all that she really wants

[Chorus: Harry Styles]
We’re only getting older, baby
And I’ve been thinking about it lately
Does it ever drive you crazy
Just how fast the night changes?
Everything that you’ve ever dreamed of
Disappearing when you wake up
But there’s nothing to be afraid of
Even when the night changes
It will never change me and you

[Verse 3: Louis Tomlinson]
Chasing there tonight, doubts are running ’round her head
He’s waiting, hides behind a cigarette
Heart is beating loud and she doesn’t want it to stop

[Verse 4: Niall Horan]
Moving too fast, moon is lighting up her skin
She’s falling, doesn’t even know it yet
Having no regrets is all that she really wants

[Chorus]

[Bridge: Zayn Malik]
Going out tonight, changes into something red
Her mother doesn’t like that kind of dress
Reminds her of the missing piece of innocence she lost

[Chorus]

[Outro: Harry Styles]
It will never change, baby
It will never change, baby
It will never change, me and you

We’ve had a similar experience in our home. While Costello was a more difficult sell, particularly for Daniel though he’s coming around, other artists like Ben Folds, Counting Crows, Lyle Lovett, Tom Petty and Billy Joel are favorites of our kids. And, reciprocally, the kids have made Ed Sheerhan, Taylor Swift, among others, favorites of their parents.

Our kids never really obsessed over One Direction, but we all enjoy their music when it comes on the radio. And you’re right that the songwriting for them is a level above other pop artists, well-evidenced in today’s SOTD.

I’m a fan of this song, and I think I’d probably enjoy 1D even more if I ended up buying one of their albums. I’m going to try to stay away from that particular rabbit hole of fandom for at least a little bit longer. I have my obsessed roomies in college to fill me in on the good songs like this one that aren’t quite as played as some of the others 🙂

Great idea for your blog; I look forward to listening to these songs. I’m trying to remember what groups or songs I came to like from my children and I’m thinking REM and U2 maybe were in there?? You might remember some and remind me 🙂
