Song of the Day #3,586: ‘Cities’ – Talking Heads

Today’s post sets a record for the longest period of time between songs from the same album. I first posted a track from Talking Heads’ 1979 Fear of Music on July 27, 2008, nearly 10 years ago. It was song number three in my Song of the Day series.

It took me 277 days to revisit Ryan Adams’ Heartbreaker, the album on which Song of the Day #2 appeared. And 365 days between tracks from The Smiths’ Strangeways, Here We Come, home of Song of the Day #1.

I’ve certainly featured just one song from many albums (including my Song of the Day #4, from Sinead O’Connor’s Faith and Courage). But exactly two songs, almost ten years apart… that’s a new one.

Much of Fear of Music is discordant and weird so I’m not shocked that I haven’t featured it, with one exception. The song ‘Heaven’ is a favorite of mine — by anybody, not just Talking Heads — and I’m frankly shocked I’ve never found a reason to post it.

I’ll try to do that before another ten years passes.

[Verse 1]
Think of London, small city
Dark, dark in the daytime
People sleep, sleep in the daytime
If they want to, if they want to

[Hook]
I’m checking them out, I’m checking them out
I got it figured out, I got it figured out
Good points some bad points
But it all works out, I’m a little freaked out
Find a city, find myself a city to live in
I will find a city, find myself a city to live in

[Verse 2]
Lot of rich people in Birmingham
Lot of ghosts in a lot of houses
Look over there! Dry ice factory
Good place to get some thinking done

[Hook]
I’m checking it out, I’m checking it out
I got it figured out, I got it figured out
There’s good points some bad points
But it all works out, you know I’m a little freaked out
Find a city, find myself a city to live in
I will find a city, find myself a city to live in

[Instrumental break]

[Hook]
I’m checking them out, I’m checking them out
I got it figured out, I got it figured out
There’s good points some bad points
But it all works out, sometimes I’m a little freaked out
Find a city, find myself a city to live in
I will find a city, find myself a city to live in

Help me

[Verse 3]
I forget to mention, forget to mention Memphis
Home of Elvis and the ancient Greeks
Do I smell? I smell home cooking
It’s only the river, it’s only the river

[Hook]
I’m checking it out, I’m checking it out
I got it figured out, I got it figured out
There’s good points some bad points
But it all works out, sometimes I’m a little freaked out
I’ll find a city, find myself a city to live in
I will find a city, find myself a city to live in

Find a city, find myself a city to live in
I will find a city, find myself a city to live in

This would be a good song to accompany a college student’s search for where to live after graduating or I guess an adult searching for a new life.😊

THANK YOU for reminding me of this great song (and album). I have been enjoying David Byrne’s new single recently.
