Song of the Day #3,584: ‘Susan’ – Aimee Mann

The best album of 2000 comes courtesy of Aimee Mann and her third solo album, Bachelor No. 2 (subtitled The Last Remains of the Dodo).

This pop rock masterpiece almost went unheard, as the record label didn’t hear a hit and held up its release. Mann bought back the rights and released it herself online, making it one of the first ever albums to find success with strictly digital distribution. Eventually she expanded the release to retail stores (how quaint that seems now) and the album went on to sell more than 200,000 copies.

While Mann’s first two solo albums were filled with smart pop songs, Bachelor No. 2 went deeper both musically and lyrically. Starting with this album, she slid into an incredible creative groove and hasn’t let up yet, six albums and 18 years later.

I consider Aimee Mann one of the finest singer-songwriters working today, and this album is Exhibit A.

Oh Susan, you were clued-in
You knew just how this thing would go
A prognosis that was hopeless
From the very first domino
I guess I see it all in hindsight
I tried to keep perspective despite
The flash of the fuse, the smell of cordite

Now I’m in that place again
And I know he can’t come in to get me
And someday he will live to regret me
Susan I can see it now

Oh Suzie, they get to me
They can really be wearying
So he threw me rope and buoy
Let me use his decoder ring
There must have been some kind of parade
We kissed for a while to see how it played
And pulled the pin on another grenade

But I’m in that place again
And I know he can’t come in to get me
And someday he will live to regret me
Suzy I can see it now

Oh Susan, the hope of fusion
Is that the halo will reappear
It may be pure illusion
But it’s beautiful while it’s here
I had some trouble with the goodbye
I checked my roman candle supply
And watched the vapor-trail in the sky

But I’m in that place again
And I know he can’t come in to get me
And someday he will live to regret me
Susan I can see it now
Susan I can see it now
Susan I can… see… it… now

  1. Dana Gallup says:

Much like Elliott Smith, Mann is an accomplished well-regarded songwriter, but the general lack of style variation and mood has kept me from a steady diet of either.

  2. Andrea katz says:

I get the biggest kick out of you two faithful blog folks. Muy interesting!
