Song of the Day #3,320: ‘I’ve Changed (Alternate Version)’ – Josh Joplin Group

It’s been 9 months since I last featured Josh Joplin on the blog, and I feel pretty much the same way I did back then. Here’s what I had to say last October:

It’s been nearly three years since I last featured Josh Joplin on the blog, and I feel pretty much the same way I did back then.

To quote myself, “these are the Random Weekend selections I most enjoy — little blasts from the past that give me an excuse to catch up with an artist I’ve long ago forgotten.”

This is almost certainly the first time I’ve listened to the Josh Joplin Group since I wrote that post, and (let’s be honest) probably the last time until it pops up on another Random Weekend.

Song of the Day #3,319: ‘Big John Shaft’ – Belle & Sebastian

Belle and Sebastian’s 2002 album Storytelling is the soundtrack to the Todd Solondz film of the same name. However, the relationship between the band and Solondz was so poor that only about five minutes of their music made it into the film’s final cut.

As a musical release, this is by far the band’s weakest effort. It contains only two or three actual songs interspersed with brief instrumentals and snippets of dialogue. I believe it was released mostly as a contractual obligation, as this was Belle & Sebastian’s final album on the Jeepster label. Continue reading

Song of the Day #3,318: ‘Most Girls’ – Hailee Steinfeld

One more placeholder before I get to Round Four of Montauk Madness. I was browsing YouTube for new videos to feature and came across this song by Hailee Steinfeld. It’s an empowering feminist anthem worthy of a little publicity on my modest platform.

I really like Steinfeld as an actress. Her Oscar nomination for True Grit was well-earned and I would have given her another for The Edge of Seventeen. Continue reading

Song of the Day #3,317: ‘Lie’ – Noy Alooshe

To give myself time to tabulate the results of Montauk Madness Round Three and prepare the Round Four matchups, I leave you with something far worthier of your time and attention than my usual ramblings.

Here is a webcam video of Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot lip-syncing an Israeli musician’s song while wearing lingerie. Continue reading

Song of the Day #3,316: ‘Step Inside This House’ – Lyle Lovett vs. The Beatles

Here we are, at the last matchup in Round Three of Montauk Madness. Things are moving fast now; we’ll be down to the final eight artists next week.

This battle might seem like a laugher in the broader world, but around these parts I expect it will be a nail-biter. Lyle Lovett vs. The Beatles. Lovett got here by dispatching Elliott Smith with 89% of the vote in Round One before winning a tighter match against Bruce Springsteen (63/38). The Beatles unanimously defeated Shakira then toppled Ben Folds with 80%. This matchup will be the first real test of the Fab Four. Continue reading
