Song of the Day #3,040: ‘Who is Afraid of Thomas Wolfe?’ – Josh Joplin Group

joshjoplinIt’s been nearly three years since I last featured Josh Joplin on the blog, and I feel pretty much the same way I did back then.

To quote myself, “these are the Random Weekend selections I most enjoy — little blasts from the past that give me an excuse to catch up with an artist I’ve long ago forgotten.”

This is almost certainly the first time I’ve listened to the Josh Joplin Group since I wrote that post, and (let’s be honest) probably the last time until it pops up on another Random Weekend.

Nice play on words in this song’s title, though.

I changed my name, I had it made
I sold my soul
And I never got paid

When it’s one long line after another
And you can’t get a green card
And all you want is to lie with your lover
But distance makes it too hard
What you don’t know is
You can never go back, never go back
You can never go home again

And it’s one headache after another
And you can’t get a green light
And all you want is to lie with your lover
And make everything alright
What you don’t know is
You can never go back, never go back
You can never go home again

And I’m going home despite
That Thomas Wolfe was right
I’m going home despite
That Thomas Wolfe was right

I dreamed I jumped
I spoke to God
I overslept
And I got fired from my job

Looking forward to hearing another song from this guy three years from now.
