Song of the Day #3,324: ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps (Love version)’ – The Beatles vs. Randy Newman

Our final Montauk Madness Round Four matchup is another good one. Randy Newman vs. The Beatles.

Newman took out Adele and The Rolling Stones before besting Fiona Apple in Round Three with 80% of the vote. The Beatles blanked Shakira in Round One but have had a progressively harder path, knocking out Ben Folds before winning a relatively close battle against Lyle Lovett, 64/36.

Newman is one of our greatest songwriters, no question, but I can’t pretend that I’m agonizing over this vote. I love his work and I’m thrilled to see him in the Elite Eight, but we’re talking about The Beatles here.

I think it’s easy for people to downplay The Beatles’ greatness as a bit too preordained, as if they’re the Citizen Kane of musicians — lazily crowned due to reputation alone. I’d invite those naysayers to sit down with the band’s whole catalog and a pair of headphones and consider that, often with just a four-track recorder and their own collective genius, they basically invented popular music as we know it.

It was a struggle to find a song to feature today because I’ve featured so many great Beatles songs over the years. But then I stumbled upon this gorgeous video of the Cirque Du Soleil Beatles show Love, which my family was lucky enough to see this summer in Las Vegas. This is a lovely acoustic version of George Harrison’s best Beatles song, ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps.’

I look at you all see the love there that’s sleeping
While my guitar gently weeps

I look at the floor and I see it needs sweeping
Still my guitar gently weeps

I don’t know why nobody told you
How to unfold your love
I don’t know how someone controlled you
They bought and sold you

I look at the world and I see it’s still turning
While my guitar gently weeps

With every mistake we must surely be learning
Still my guitar gently weeps

I don’t know how you were diverted
You were perverted too
I don’t know how you were inverted
No one alerted you

I look from the wings at the play you are staging
While my guitar gently weeps

As I’m sitting here doing nothing but aging
Still my guitar gently weeps

I too am happy to see Randy Newman advance as far as he has in this contest, but as I said (or at least thought) from the beginning, it’s hard to ultimately imagine anyone topping the Beatles.

  2. Peg says:

    Ditto Beatles for me

Last night, we were anticipating today’s match up between Lyle Lovett and Randy Newman and hoping you’d choose to feature one of their collaborations. I was surprised and disappointed to see Lyle had not made it to this round.

In his honor, I am voting for Newman.

  4. The Cool Guy (Daniel) says:

I voted for my boy Lyle Lovett against The Beatles thinking that it would be difficult to vote for him against Randy Newman since they’re such close friends (and of course since I’m a fan of both of their music). Now since at The Beatles against Randy Newman and Lyle Lovett has been slighted, it’s very easy for me to go with Randy Newman here in Lyle’s honor.
