Song of the Day #2,666: ‘Viva La Vida’ – Coldplay

viva_la_vida_coldplayMy 9-year-old, Fiona, just started her second year of violin lessons and she’s gotten pretty good at it. I played a little piano as a kid but it never came natural to me, so it’s nice to see one of my offspring exhibit some musical chops.

As a member of the YouTube generation, Fiona spends a lot of time watching violin tutorials. Recently she came across one for Coldplay’s ‘Viva La Vida’ and acquired a whole new appreciation for the song.

So much so that she told me the other day she had listened to a 10-hour loop of the track on her computer. She clarified that the YouTube video loops the song for 10 hours but she listened to it for maybe a half hour.

Sure enough, such a video exists. Why anybody would be moved to create and upload a 10-hour loop of anything is beyond me, but apparently it happens.

Forget ten hours, though. For its 4-minute running time, this really is a great song. Lovely instrumentation, a sublime melody and spot-on production. One of the band’s best.

[Verse 1]
I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own
I used to roll the dice, feel the fear in my enemy’s eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing
Now the old King is dead, long live the King
One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand

[Chorus 1]
I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can’t explain
Once you go there was never
Never an honest word
And that was when I ruled the world

[Verse 2]
It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn’t believe what I’d become
Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?

[Chorus 2] x2
I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can’t explain
I know Saint Peter won’t call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

We had a violin recital last week from Fiona and she did a wonderful job! Good idea to have a recital with Daniel and Fiona, also Sophia and Maddie as back up singers 🙂
