I always mean to watch the Country Music Awards but usually I forget. It’s an entertaining show, with the winning duo of Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood as hosts and plenty of memorable performances.
And as artists such as Kacey Musgraves, Ashley Monroe and Brandy Clark join Miranda Lambert and Paisley among my favorites, the number of acts worth watching goes up.
That said, I missed the show again this year. But the following morning, I noticed the name “Chris Stapleton” trending on multiple social networks (along with the buzz about Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani hooking up).
Stapleton is a 37-year-old Kentuckian who won a bevy or trophies at the CMAs for his first solo album, Traveller. Stapleton has written hit songs for country royalty, as well as non-country artists such as Adele. This year he stepped into the spotlight in a big way.
On the CMAs, Stapleton was joined by big fan Justin Timberlake for a pair of soulful performances, including today’s SOTD. It’s surprising to hear that rich voice coming out of that large beard.
On a whim I decided to grab Stapleton’s album on Amazon, only to discover that the CD version is already on back order. An overnight success 15 years in the making.
I used to spend my nights out in a barroom
Liquor was the only love I’ve known
But you rescued me from reachin’ for the bottle
And brought me back from being too far gone
[Chorus]
You’re as smooth as Tennessee whiskey
You’re as sweet as strawberry wine
You’re as warm as a glass of brandy
And honey, I stay stoned on your love all the time
[Verse 2]
I’ve looked for love in all the same old places
Found the bottom of a bottle always dry
But when you poured out your heart I didn’t waste it
‘Cause there’s nothing like your love to get me high
[Chorus]
You’re as smooth as Tennessee whiskey
You’re as sweet as strawberry wine
You’re as warm as a glass of brandy
And honey, I stay stoned on your love all the time
[Chorus]
You’re as smooth as Tennessee whiskey
You’re as sweet as strawberry wine
You’re as warm as a glass of brandy
And honey, I stay stoned on your love all the time
[Chorus]
You’re as smooth as Tennessee whiskey
You’re as sweet as strawberry wine
You’re as warm as a glass of brandy
And honey, I stay stoned on your love all the time
Well, I stayed stoned on your love all the time
Good stuff. If the rest of his album is this bluesy and soulful, I might enjoy it.
I haven’t listened yet but the reviews suggest that it is.
I agree, it’s bluesy and soulful, and I like it a lot 😉
