Song of the Day #2,665: ‘Focus’ – Ariana Grande

ariana_grande_focusWhen I heard ‘Focus,’ the latest single from Ariana Grande, I told my daughter Sophia I might go ahead and buy her latest album, My Everything, because this was the fourth or fifth enjoyable track I’ve heard from it.

Sure, it’s a rehash of ‘Problem’ (with Jamie Foxx handling the spoken word chorus accompaniment this time around) but ‘Problem’ is friggin’ great.

Sophia pointed out that ‘Focus’ is actually the lead single from a new Grande album — titled Moonlight — due out in the next few months.

That ‘always something new coming out’ marketing strategy is more common these days, and a stark contrast to yesterday’s featured artist, Adele, who spent three years out of the spotlight before releasing her next album.

Grande is a perfect artist for this approach. She’s built for singles, not albums. Her songs are light summer radio hits, forgotten months later.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that. We need artists like this as surely as we need superhero movies and reality television. Cultural snobs might disagree, but who wants to hang out with them, anyway?

[Verse 1]
I know what I came to do
And that ain’t gonna change
So go ahead and talk your talk
Cause I won’t take the bait
I’m over here doing what I like
I’m over here working day and night
And if my real ain’t real enough
I’m sorry for you, bae

[Pre-Chorus]
Let’s find a light inside our universe now
Where ain’t nobody keep on holding us down
Just come and get it, let them say what they say
Cause I’m about to put them all away, wooh

[Chorus: Jamie Foxx (Ariana Grande)]
Focus on me, f-f-focus on me
Focus on me, f-f-focus on me
Focus on me (Focus), f-f-focus on me (Focus on me)
Focus on me (Focus), f-f-focus on me (Focus on me)

[Verse 2]
I can tell you’re curious
It’s written on your lips
Ain’t no need to hold it back
Go ‘head and talk your shit
I know you’re hoping that I’ll react
I know you’re hoping I’m looking back
But if my real ain’t real enough
Then I don’t know what is

[Pre-Chorus]
Let’s find a light inside our universe now
Where ain’t nobody keep on holding us down
Just come and get it, let them say what they say
Cause I’m about to put them all away

[Chorus: Jamie Foxx (Ariana Grande)]
Focus on me, f-f-focus on me
Focus on me, f-f-focus on me
Focus on me (Focus), f-f-focus on me (Focus on me)
Focus on me (Focus), f-f-focus on me (Focus on me)

[Bridge]
1, 2, 3, c’mon girls
You’re gonna like it
Come on, now, now

[Pre-Chorus]
Let’s find a light inside our universe now
Where ain’t nobody keep on holding us down
Just come and get it, let them say what they say
Cause I’m about to put them all away

[Chorus: Jamie Foxx (Ariana Grande)]
Focus on me, f-f-focus on me
Focus on me, f-f-focus on me
Focus on me (Focus), f-f-focus on me (Focus on me)
Focus on me (Focus), f-f-focus on me (Focus on me)
Focus on me, f-f-focus on me
Focus on me, f-f-focus on me
Focus on me (Focus), f-f-focus on me (Focus on me)
Focus on me (Focus), f-f-focus on me (Focus on me)

  1. Dana says:

Ariana and her songs may be eye and ear candy, but, like candy, i don’t find it ultimately that satisfying or good for you, and I wouldn’t want a stready diet of it,
