Song of the Day #1,088: ‘If I Didn’t Have You’ – Billy Crystal & John Goodman

After my recent two weeks of Randy Newman posts, I had some requests for even more.

During those weeks, I focused on Newman’s sincere and sarcastic sides, but it occurred to me that I had a whole other facet of the man to explore: his wonderful work for the movies (especially Disney). Newman has been nominated for more than a dozen Oscars, winning twice.

This week I’ll feature five songs Newman wrote for animated Disney films. Most of these are sung by other people but all maintain his distinctive style.

First up is a song from Monsters Inc. performed by Billy Crystal and John Goodman, the film’s cartoon stars. I don’t remember this song from the movie (I assume it played over the end credits) but I instantly like its vaudevillian flair.

(Sulley)If I were a rich man
With a million or two

(Mike)I’d live in a penthouse
In a room, with a view

(Sulley) And if I were handsome (No way)
It could happen
Those dreams do come true

I wouldn’t have nothin if I didn’t have you
Wouldn’t have nothin if I didn’t have
Wouldn’t have nothin if I didn’t have
Wouldn’t have nothin

(Mike) Can I tell you something?
For years I have envied (You green with it)
Your grace and your charm
Everyone loves you, you know? (Yes I know I know I know)
I must admit it
Big guy you always come through
I wouldn’t have nothin if I didn’t have you

(Both)You and me together
That’s how it always should be
One without the other
Don`t mean nothing to me, nothing to me.

(Mike) Ya I wouldn`t be nothin, (Aw now)
If I didn`t have you to serve
I`m just a punky little eyeball
And a funky optic nerve

Hey I never told you this
Sometimes I get a little blue (Looks good on you)
But I wouldn`t have nothin if I didn`t have you,

(Sulley) Let`s dance (haha)
(Mike) Look Ma! I`m dancin!
Would you let me lead?
Look at that its two big guys who’re light on their feet
Don`t you dare dip me don`t you dare dip me don`t you dare dip me
Ow I should have stretched

(Sulley) Yes I wouldn`t be nothin
If I didn`t have you (I know what you mean Sulley because)
I wouldn`t know where to go (me too because I)
Or know, what to do (why do you keep singin my part)

(Both) I Don`t have to say it (Aw say it anyway)
Cause we both know it’s true
I wouldn`t have nothin if I didn`t have
I wouldn`t have nothin if I didn`t have
I wouldn`t have nothin if I didn`t have
Wouldn`t have nothin if I didn`t have
Youuuuu

(Mike) One more time! Big one!
(Sulley) Don`t have to say it
(Mike) Where`d everybody come from?
(Sulley)Oh we both know its true
(Mike) Let`s take it home big guy
(Both) I wouldn`t have nothin if I didn`t have
I wouldn`t have nothin if I didn`t have
I wouldn`t have nothin if I didn`t have
You, you, you!
A-E-I-O that means you
Ya!

First, welcome back!! You were missed.

Second, if you return from every blog vacation with a week of songs to please your loyal readers, feel free to take another one to contempate those Sexsmith weekends (has he run out of material yet? 😉

Third, how can you not remember this song? It’s such a great number. Still, I admit that I had no idea it was an original song (save for the green and blue “ad libs,” of course). The chorus seems as though it’s hundreds of years old; are you sure Newman didn’t use an existing song? If not, that’s amazing that he was able to write something that seems so old.

Looking forward to a week of Newman at the movies (or at least at Pixar); did you consider including any of his scores?

A great theme indeed by a crowd favorite artist. It also dovetails into my suggested theme weekends (see yesterday’s comment).

Good work you. I too am surprised you didn’t recall the song from the film. The song doesn’t sound “hundreds” of years old–its not Celtic for heaven’s sake! But it does have a nice 40’s type sound, but that sound is definitely a part of Newman’s tool box.

    Looking forward to this week!

Done catching up for now! 🙂

I love this song, and it made me stay until the very end of the credits because of it.

So ya, it’s an awesome song, and I love this week.
