Song of the Day #541: ‘I Need You’ – The Beatles

I’ve really come to appreciate the Help! album over the past several months as I’ve played it on a daily basis for my daughters on our way to school each morning.

I’ve always considered it a good second-tier Beatles album, and I suppose I still do considering how amazing that first tier is… but I now believe it’s closer in quality to Rubber Soul and Revolver than I’d ever given it credit for before.

I’ve featured several songs from Help! already, including two of the band’s best songs (‘Ticket to Ride‘ and ‘You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away‘) and today I’m focusing on one of the two George Harrison tracks on the album.

My youngest daughter has become a big fan of ‘I Need You,’ to the point that it’s the main song she requests from this album full of great songs. I’d never thought much about it one way or the other but I’ve come to love it as well — in part because she does, I’m sure, but also because it’s a nice little piece of broken-heart songwriting.

You don’t realise how much I need you
Love you all the time and never leave you
Please come on back to me
I’m lonely as can be
I need you

Said you had a thing or two to tell me
How was I to know you would upset me?
I didn’t realise as I looked in your eyes
You told me.

Oh yes, you told me, you don’t want my lovin’ anymore
That’s when it hurt me
And feeling like this, I just can’t go on anymore

Please remember how I feel about you
I could never really live without you
So come on back and see just what you mean to me
I need you

But when you told me, you don’t want my lovin’ anymore
That’s when it hurt me
And feeling like this, I just can’t go on anymore

Please remember how I feel about you
I could never really live without you
So, come on back and see just what you mean to me
I need you, I need you, I need you

As this song started, I had this shocking feeling – “I don’t know this song!” And as it continues, the realization is getting stronger. I really don’t know this song. How, I wonder, is that possible in a Beatles re-issue, Beatles Rock Band, Beatles plastered all over my daughter’s wall, Beatles “Love” show in Vegas universe? Yet, it’s true.

So please thank Fiona for introducing me to this lovely little ditty. Does she articulate what about it so appeals to her? I’m always curious what attracts young listeners to songs not “meant” specifically for them.

IT’s a wonderful thing to re-experience and re-appreciate songs (and movies, etc) through the eyes of your children. I think Fiona should have her own theme week on SOTD:)
