Song of the Day #3,243: ‘Tennessee Whiskey’ – Chris Stapleton

I last featured this song about a year and a half ago, when I posted a live Country Music Awards performance by Chris Stapleton and Justin Timberlake. That performance was my introduction to Chris Stapleton… and lot of other people’s, too.

That performance vaulted the country blue singer-songwriter into the national spotlight and helped push his debut album, Traveller, to Billboard’s #1 spot and eventual double-platinum status. Not bad for three minutes’ work.

Stapleton has such a rich, powerful voice that it’s a mystery why he has toiled away as a writer of hits for other artists without earning much attention as a performer himself. But that all changed in November.

chris_stapleton_travellerThe Random iTunes Fairy did me a favor this weekend and served up a track from Chris Stapleton’s debut album, Traveller. I’ve wanted to post something about the record since I picked it up a couple of weeks ago but I’m in the middle of a monthlong flashback series so I didn’t think I’d do it anytime soon.

Stapleton has been kicking around Nashville for years as a songwriter and performer but reached most people’s radars (including mine) following a riveting performance alongside Justin Timberlake at the recent Country Music Awards.
