Continuing a countdown of my favorite albums of 1977…

#5 – Talking Heads: 77 – Talking Heads

This is the first of two debut albums in my top five, making 1977 not just a great year for music overall but a great year for the introduction of important new artists.

I can only imagine what it was like to hear Talking Heads for the first time in 1977. Here was a band of former art school students blending punk, new wave, and world music in songs with provocative lyrics and a lead singer whose clipped, chirping vocals were simultaneously funny and unnerving (but sometimes surprisingly sweet).

Song of the Day #3,327: ‘Don’t Worry About the Government’ – Talking Heads

Hard to believe it’s been 40 years since Talking Heads released its debut album, conveniently titled Talking Heads: 77. Of course, I was five years old in 1977, so it’s not as if I’ve been a fan of the band for that long.

This sound feels unique and new even today, let alone four decades ago. David Byrne and his bandmates were truly trendsetting artists.

Song of the Day #1,507: ‘Psycho Killer’ – Talking Heads

I’m back on my musical genome project this week, and I’ve arrived at my first aberration.

First, a few words about how I went about categorizing my tastes. I scanned my music library for artists whose entire discographies I own (or near enough to not make much difference) but discounted anybody who is only two or three albums into a career. Then I started scanning that list (of 35 artists) for similarities.
