Song of the Day #6,584: ‘Someone To Watch the Band With Me’ – Tift Merritt

Nearly ten years have passed since Tift Merritt’s last album, 2017’s wonderful Stitch of the World.

Merritt stepped away from recording new music after her daughter was born, but she certainly kept busy. She has served as a Practitioner-In-Residence at Duke University, collected artist interviews on her podcast The Spark, is a board member for the Artist Rights Alliance, and has refurbished an historic boutique hotel in her hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina. The 18-room hotel, The Gables, is now booking rooms for the fall.

Song of the Day #2,622: ‘The Slim’ – Sugar

copper_blue_hq_769410The album that showed up the most in my research of 1992’s most critically-acclaimed records is one I’d never heard of — Copper Blue by Sugar. This is the debut album by the band, which was founded by Bob Mould, former Husker Du frontman.

I guess the fact that I don’t know anything by Husker Du, either, explains why this one is totally new to me.

Song of the Day #2,428: ‘Sugar’ – Maroon 5

maroon_5_sugarIn Billboard’s third spot this week is Maroon 5 with ‘Sugar.’ This is the eighth straight single the band has landed in the top ten.

More interesting than the song, which is a highly enjoyable pop soul confection, is the music video. Adam Levine recruited Wedding Crashers director David Dobkin to film the band crashing a series of weddings on a single day in Los Angeles.
