Nearly ten years have passed since Tift Merritt’s last album, 2017’s wonderful Stitch of the World.
Merritt stepped away from recording new music after her daughter was born, but she certainly kept busy. She has served as a Practitioner-In-Residence at Duke University, collected artist interviews on her podcast The Spark, is a board member for the Artist Rights Alliance, and has refurbished an historic boutique hotel in her hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina. The 18-room hotel, The Gables, is now booking rooms for the fall.
At some point in the past few years, Merritt started getting the bug to write songs again. Her seventh solo studio album, Sugar, dropped a few weeks back.
On Sugar, Merritt picks up right where she left off, serving up thoughtful, melodic Americana songs in her comforting rasp. She has clearly been troubled by the cultural coarsening of the past decade, and many of these tracks find her pining for kindness, love, and connection.
Some might say that makes her naive, ensconced in her liberal enclave singing about the way things used to be. I find it more clear-eyed but hopeful, and after a nine-year absence, I’m happy to have Merritt’s reassuring voice in my ear again.
Any old thing I want gets delivered to my door
Any time night or day, I read any story in the world
There’s just one thing I cannot seem to find
I’m getting tired of hoping and I’m almost out of trying
[Pre-Chorus]
I just want something simple, to go down to some dive
Dance with someone who makes me feel alive
[Chorus]
When are you coming home?
I’m tired of sleeping all alone
I need someone to watch the band with me
[Verse 2]
What kind of prayer these days could cut through all the slog
And through the noise, a letter that read clear and strong
So that you’d call to me like I was right where you belong
I’ve got so much to tell you, stop taking way too long
[Pre-Chorus]
Come on, baby, you got to hurry to this dive
The band is playing loud, I want to make you feel alive
[Chorus]
When are you coming home?
I’m tired of sleeping on my own
I need someone to watch the band with me
When are you coming home?
I’m tired of sleeping all alone
I need someone to watch the band with me
[Pre-Chorus]
Come on, baby, you got to hurry to this dive
The band is playing loud, I’m gonna make you feel alive
[Chorus]
When are you coming home?
I’m tired of sleeping all alone
I want someone to watch the band with me
When are you coming home?
I’m tired of sleeping all alone
I want someone to watch the band with me
I’m ready to book a room at that historic boutique hotel! Who’s joining me? We can listen to the new album on the trip.🤣
