Song of the Day #6,585: ‘Till the Going’s Gone’ – Miranda Lambert

In a year of notable new releases by women, I was very excited to hear that my favorite of all — Miranda Lambert — will drop her tenth solo studio album in October.

Lambert is currently riding high on the success of Ella Langley’s ‘Choosin’ Texas,’ the Billboard juggernaut that she co-wrote and produced. That song has a bit of a 70s feel, and it’s that decade Lambert is exploring on her new album, Crisco.

Specifically, she aims to capture the spirit of country disco (hence, crisco) made popular by Glen Campbell, Dolly Parton, and Kenny Rogers in the 70s and 80s. It turns out the slow-groove duet ‘A Song to Sing‘ she recorded with Chris Stapleton last year was the first taste of this new project.

She dropped two more tracks in recent weeks, the title song and today’s SOTD, in the same sweet spot. The “country disco” concept seems to mostly mean speeding up the drums, bringing up the strings in the mix, and delivering tunes that make you sway, not go full Travolta.

That’s fine with me. I’ll happily go anywhere Miranda wants to take me.

[Verse 1]
I knew a boy in Reno had a cherry El Camino
And a weakness for a certain cowgirl kind
He saved up for a ring, but I was scared of shiny things
So I left a note and dropped him on a dime

[Chorus]
Yeah, I gotta keep movin’, gotta keep groovin’
Let that song that’s in my soul carry me on down the road
I gotta keep goin’ ’til the goin’s gone
‘Til it’s gone, gone, gone

[Verse 2]
I took a job in Saginaw, I thought that I would love it, y’all
I miss that southern drawl in Abilene
I gathered up my pocket change and hit a couple Motel 8s
Kept myself awake with nicotine

[Chorus]
Yeah, I gotta keep movin’, gotta keep groovin’
Let that song that’s in my soul carry me on down the road
I gotta keep goin’ ’til the goin’s gone
’Til it’s gonе, gone, gone

[Verse 3]
Sometimеs your tires are in the mud, sometimes your cards run outta luck
Honey, you don’t have to live this way
Just find another exit and learn another lesson
That’s why the good Lord made the interstate

[Chorus]
Yeah, I gotta keep movin’, gotta keep groovin’
Let that song that’s in my soul carry me on down the road
I gotta keep goin’ ’til the goin’s gone
‘Til it’s gone, gone, gone

[Outro]
‘Til it’s gone, gone, gone
I gotta keep movin’
