Song of the Day #2,428: ‘Sugar’ – Maroon 5

maroon_5_sugarIn Billboard’s third spot this week is Maroon 5 with ‘Sugar.’ This is the eighth straight single the band has landed in the top ten.

More interesting than the song, which is a highly enjoyable pop soul confection, is the music video. Adam Levine recruited Wedding Crashers director David Dobkin to film the band crashing a series of weddings on a single day in Los Angeles.

The footage is so well-shot and seemingly coordinated that I figured the whole thing had to be a set-up, but the band insists it was real. Apparently arrangements were made with each groom but the brides and guests were in the dark.

However, there are a few actors in the mix (including one of the grooms and the parents of one bride), suggesting that at least some of the weddings were staged.

At any rate, it’s a clever idea and very well-executed whether or not it’s authentic.

[Verse 1]
I’m hurting baby, I’m broken down
I need your loving, loving I need it now
When I’m without you, I’m something weak
You got me begging, begging I’m on my knees

[Pre-Chorus]
I don’t wanna be needing your love
I just wanna be deep in your love
And it’s killing me when you’re away
Oh baby
Cause I really don’t care where you are
I just wanna be there where you are
And I gotta get one little taste

[Chorus]
Sugar, yes please
Would you come and put it down on me?
I’m right here, cause I need
Little love, a little sympathy
Yeah you show me good loving, make it alright
Need a little sweetness in my life
Your sugar, yes please
Would you come and put it down on me?

[Verse 2]
Babe, my broken pieces, you pick them up
Don’t leave me hanging, hanging come give me some
When I’m without you, I’m so insecure
You are the one thing, one thing I’m living for

[Pre-Chorus + Chorus]

[Bridge]
I want that red velvet
I want that sugar sweet
Don’t let nobody touch it unless that somebody’s me
I gotta be a man, there ain’t no other way
Cause girl you’re hotter than the Southern California Bay
Never wanna play no games, you don’t gotta be afraid
Don’t give me all that shy shit
No make-up on, that’s my sugar

[Chorus 2x]

I could have sworn you featured this video already, but I guess not.

While I’m sure you are right that some parts were stages, the reactions by most of the participants appear so genuine that they would all have to either be great actors or authentic wedding participants.

I’m curious if the band played more than one song. I would want them to stay and be the house band for the noght.

I read that they went into ‘She Will Be Loved’ after this song so the couples could have a slow dance.
