‘Contact’ is the final song on Daft Punk’s final album, 2013’s Random Access Memories. This electronic freakout features a NASA recording by astronaut Eugene Cernan, who saw an unidentified object outside the window of his capsule during the Apollo 17 mission in 1972.
Cernan is known as the “last man on the Moon,” as nobody since has set foot on its surface. I suppose it’s fitting that his is the last voice you hear on Daft Punk’s swan song.
The Danish film Flee made history a few weeks back when it became the first movie ever nominated for Best Documentary, Best International Feature, and Best Animated Feature. It’s as unique and fascinating as that intersection of qualities suggests.
I will have more to say about Flee when I get to my top ten list, but for now I want to highlight one of my favorite scenes from the film and another of my favorite musical moments from last year.
Rounding out my first week of ‘What the Kids are Listening To’ is The Weeknd with ‘I Feel It Coming,’ the second single from his album Starboy.
Like the title track, ‘I Feel It Coming’ is a collaboration with Daft Punk, who lend the same techno disco production and mechanized vocals they brought to ‘Get Lucky’ to this song.
Best Songs of 2013 – #21
Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories is one of the most celebrated albums of the year, certain to sit at the top of many a critic’s best-of list.
I don’t think it’s all that great, to be honest. Yes, ‘Get Lucky’ is one of the breakout songs of the year (and one I considered for this list) but the record too often suffers the failures of its genre. Electronic music is repetitive and boring. So is much of this album.
