The video flips the script, putting men in the eye candy role that women have filled in music videos for decades. Call it the female gaze. XCX recruited 60 men of various degrees of celebrity, mostly famous through music or YouTube, and asked them to do any number of cute/funny things.
The usual caveats apply. I allow only one song per album, to avoid a glut of tracks by the same few artists. These songs had to have an official release in 2014, either on an album or as a single. And, as always, I am listing the songs I like the best, not necessarily the songs that had the biggest impact on last year’s musical landscape.
Charli XCX is a new name to me, but the 21-year-old British songwriter has put her stamp on a couple of recent hits. One is the ubiquitous ‘Fancy,’ on which she sings the chorus, and the other is Icona Pop’s ‘I Love It,’ which she both wrote and performs on.
