Song of the Day #2,356: ‘Boom Clap (Live on Top of the Pops)’ – Charli XCX

charli_xcx2015 has arrived but I still have some unfinished 2014 business. Over the next month, I’ll count down my top 20 songs from last year.

The usual caveats apply. I allow only one song per album, to avoid a glut of tracks by the same few artists. These songs had to have an official release in 2014, either on an album or as a single. And, as always, I am listing the songs I like the best, not necessarily the songs that had the biggest impact on last year’s musical landscape.

Regular readers will remember the discussion around last year’s list, which excluded just about every big hit of 2013. I wasn’t familiar with many of those songs, as I rarely listen to radio.

To ensure that such songs would get a fair shake on this year’s list, I started my Billboard recap series, wherein I feature as Songs of the Day the current top ten every few months.

That exercise unearthed a whole lot of crap but also a few songs that wound up making this list (including today’s selection).

Best Songs of 2014 – #20
‘Boom Clap’ – Charli XCX

I recently purchased Charli XCX’s debut album, Sucker, after reading a lot of advance praise. It’s a brash, danceable mix of punk and pop that has left me relatively cold after one listen.

But its hit single, ‘Boom Clap,’ has only grown on me since it first made a splash as part of the Fault in Our Stars soundtrack. I can’t hear this song without singing it for hours afterward.

(Note: Several songs on my top 20 have already been featured on the blog. In order to honor my strict no-repeats rule, I’ll post live or alternate versions of those tracks but also link back to the original.)

[Verse 1]
You’re picture-perfect blue
Sunbathing under the moon
Stars shining as your bones illuminate
First kiss just like a drug
Under your influence
You take me over, you’re the magic in my veins
This must be love

[Chorus]
Boom clap, the sound of my heart
The beat goes on and on and on and on and
Boom clap, you make me feel good
Come on to me, come on to me now
Boom clap, the sound of my heart
The beat goes on and on and on and on and
Boom clap, you make me feel good
Come on to me, come on to me now

[Verse 2]
No silver or no gold
Could dress me up so good
You’re the glitter in the darkness of my world
Just tell me what to do
I’ll fall right into you
We’re going under cast the spell, just say the word
I feel your love!

[Chorus]

[Bridge]
You are the light and I will follow
You let me lose my shadow
You are the sun, the glowing halo
And you keep burning me up with all your love, oh

[Chorus](2x)

All of your regular readers in this household have been looking forward to this countdown. And as the cyber town cryer over last year’s selections, I, for one, am interested to see the impact of your listening to radio fare on this list.

Today’s selection is, to be sure, catchy and enjoyable, and it’s inclusion in Fault in Our Stars rekindles fond memories of the film. So, no major criticism from me on this pick.

    Let the countdown begin!
