Song of the Day #2,208: ‘Boom Clap’ – Charli XCX

charli_xcxFinishing up this week’s look at the Billboard Hot 100 is Charli XCX, whose ‘Boom Clap’ sits at #13.

Charli XCX is a new name to me, but the 21-year-old British songwriter has put her stamp on a couple of recent hits. One is the ubiquitous ‘Fancy,’ on which she sings the chorus, and the other is Icona Pop’s ‘I Love It,’ which she both wrote and performs on.

‘Boom Clap’ is the first solo song by Charli XCX to reach Billboard’s chart, and it has done so thanks to its placement on the Fault in our Stars soundtrack, from which it is the first single.

The chorus is catchy but I doubt this song will strike the kind of nerve her previous two hits did. Maybe the movie tie-in will give it some legs.

[Verse 1]
You’re picture-perfect blue
Sunbathing under moon
Stars shining as your bones illuminate
First kiss just like a drug
Under your influence
You take me over, you’re the magic in my veins
This must be love

[Chorus]
Boom clap, the sound in my heart
The beat goes on and on and on and on and
Boom clap, you make me feel good
Come home to me, come home to me now
Boom clap, the sound in my heart
The beat goes on and on and on and on and
Boom clap, you make me feel good
Come home to me, come home to me now

[Verse 2]
No silver or no gold
Could dress me up so good
You’re the glitter in the darkness of my world
Just tell me what to do
I’ll fall right into you
We’re going under cast the spell, just say the word
I feel your love!

[Chorus]

[Bridge]
You are the light and I will follow
You let me lose my shadow
You are the sun, the glowing halo
And you keep burning me up with all your love, oh

[Chorus](2x)

  1. Dana says:

She clearly knows how to craft a pop song, but this is far too bubble gum, lacking the edge of better pop songs by artists like Pink.
