After the Disco is the band’s sophomore effort, and it’s a blast. As you’d expect from this pairing, the songs combine the sticky, off-kilter melodies of The Shins with some novel production techniques. It’s cerebral ear candy.
Broken Bells is a band formed in 2010 by James Mercer of The Shins and producer/songwriter Brian Burton (better known as Danger Mouse). The two share songwriting credits and play all of the instruments on their songs, with Mercer as lead vocalist and Burton handling production duties.
They released a self-titled album in 2010 and sophomore effort After the Disco in 2014. No word on whether they will collaborate again.
‘Holding On For Life’ – Broken Bells
Today’s selection, like yesterday’s is a collaboration between two established artists — in this case, Danger Mouse and James Mercer (the man behind The Shins).
I recently named The Shins’ Port of Morrow my favorite album of the decade so far, so I’m a natural audience for any new material from Mercer. This mash-up certainly does the trick, marrying his poignant introspection with a nifty 70s soundscape courtesy of Danger Mouse.
Over on the right-hand side of the page, you’ll see the six albums I’ve bought this year and how I rank them. Two I’ve already written about (Shakira’s Shakira and Beck’s Morning Phase) and the rest I will cover this week.
