Song of the Day #4,285: ‘Medicine’ – Broken Bells

Broken Bells is a group formed by The Shins’ frontman James Mercer and the DJ Danger Mouse. They released two albums, in 2010 and 2014.

After the Disco is the band’s sophomore effort, and it’s a blast. As you’d expect from this pairing, the songs combine the sticky, off-kilter melodies of The Shins with some novel production techniques. It’s cerebral ear candy.

Broken Bells released a single in September of 2019, promising a third LP soon. In this age of sophisticated home studio equipment and digital recording technology, I wonder if they could knock that baby out from self-isolation and get it streaming sooner than expected.

[Verse 1]
This ordinary room is turning
Into something of a prison hole
And the only thing we know for certain is that
Don’t nobody know

[Bridge]
You think none of this is real that’s
Why you never try
So tear it down or build it up it’s the same

[Verse 2]
And on another lonely evening
When you’re staying up counting omens
In the morning is it so disturbing that you
Just won’t let it go

[Chorus]
You think hurting gives you license
To do anything at all
But you gotta take your medicine
Allow your hands to lose their grip and let it fall

[Verse 3]
It’s a wonder anyone can breathe here
With a smoke too thick to cough
So we’re falling as we run from cover from the
Bombs we’re setting off

[Chorus]
You think hurting gives you license
To do anything at all
But you gotta take your medicine
Allow your hands to lose their grip and let it fall
Allow your hands to lose their grip and let it fall

[Outro]
So we watch another good day fading
How we gonna leave the hang man hanging
Girl one day you know it all melts into air

Never heard of Broken Bells, though I’ve heard of the two guys comprising them. Nice sound.

Let me know if they release that next single. I’m pretty sure I’ll have time to listen as I’ll be staring at the wall in our house.
