Mariah Carey’s ‘Emotions’ was her fifth number one hit in a row (making her the only artist to ever have her first five singles reach #1). She dominated the airwaves in the early 90s the way Katy Perry has twenty years later.

Song of the Day #1,759: ‘Hotel Majestic’ – Fountains of Wayne

trafficweatherI don’t know if Fountains of Wayne have ever written a bad song.

They’ve certainly written better ones than others, and they have a tendency to put too many songs on their albums, but pound for pound and note for note I’d put Chris Collingwood and Adam Schlesinger’s songwriting chops up there against anybody’s.

Song of the Day #1,758: ‘My Problem Is You’ – Jackson Browne

jackson_browne_im_aliveToday’s Random Weekend track is a cut from Jackson Browne’s 1993 album I’m Alive. There isn’t a bad song on that album.

Two things about this song have always struck me as funny. One is the background vocals, which include a man whose voice is so deep he sounds like a holdover from the Oak Ridge Boys.
