Song of the Day #2,065: ‘Both Sides Now’ – Judy Collins

mad_men_finaleThe new season of Mad Men is around the corner and the anticipation has me remembering the lovely way the previous season wrapped up.

Season Six as a whole was one of the more scattered of the series’ run, at least partly by design. As the 60s started to bleed into the 70s, the outside world increasingly encroached on the usually insulated characters. The assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy, as well as the Vietnam War, left everybody shaken.

Song of the Day #2,063: ‘Let it Go’ – Idina Menzel, Jimmy Fallon & The Roots

fallon_menzelThe Frozen showstopper ‘Let it Go’ predictably won the Oscar a few nights ago, but its win was overshadowed by John Travolta’s hilarious bungling of performer Idina Menzel’s name.

After being introduced as “Adele Dzaeem,” Menzel seemed to struggle a bit during her performance. She appeared visibly nervous, rushed the song a bit and faltered on the last big note. I don’t know if we can pin all of that on Travolta, but I’ll do it anyway.

Song of the Day #2,062: ‘Royals’ – Bruce Springsteen

bruce_springsteenA Bruce Springsteen cover of Lorde’s ‘Royals’ sound like something you’d see on Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show.

Who can forget the duet of ‘Whip My Hair Back and Forth’ between “Neil Young” and Springsteen on Fallon’s Late Night, after all?

(Not that I’m comparing ‘Royals,’ an excellent song, to ‘Whip My Hair Back and Forth,’ but a version by Springsteen seems just as likely.

Song of the Day #2,061: ‘Partition’ – Beyoncé

beyonce_partitionI continue to be impressed by just how good Beyoncé’s surprise album is.

It’s easily the best thing she’s ever done, and has only gotten better with repeated listens.

It’s almost as if she was holding back, releasing inconsistent, bland albums as a set-up for the industry-rattling detonation of this thing.

Or maybe she’s just getting better at her day job.
