Song of the Day #2,060: ‘Good to Go’ – Elliott Smith

elliott_smithEarlier today I was waiting to pick up one of my daughters from soccer practice, while her sister sat next to me in the car.

Elliott Smith’s ‘The Biggest Lie’ came up on my stereo (I have my music library playing on random, making every trip I take basically Random Weekends on steroids).

That’s always been one of my favorite Smith tunes, but it hit me harder than usual this time.

Song of the Day #2,059: ‘Tell Me’ – The Rolling Stones

At the time they were making an ok living recording covers of R&B songs, but their management knew the real money was in publishing. So the boys reluctantly kicked off what would become one of the most prolific and celebrated songwriting partnerships in music history.

Song of the Day #2,057: ‘Let it Go’ – Caleb Hyles

caleb_hylesOf the thousands of YouTube cover versions of ‘Let it Go,’ this one seems to have won the prize with more than 3 million views and counting.

Caleb Hyles is an Auburn senior who sings lead vocals for a heavy metal band when he isn’t channeling Idina Menzel on Oscar-nominated Disney songs. I bet he’s really good at that, too.

Song of the Day #2,056: ‘Let it Go’ – Various Singers

let_it_goHere’s a version of ‘Let it Go’ presented in 25 different languages, a sampling of the more than 40 into which the film was translated.

This was the first ‘Let it Go’ variation to hit it big on YouTube, or at least the first one I saw.

My first thought was how impressive it is that Disney found so many singers who sound like Idina Menzel. Many YouTube commenters actually think it’s Menzel herself singing the whole thing (which would be quite the feat, but alas it isn’t the case).
