For my final selection of favorite songs, I’m travelling back (once again) to high school.
It’s no surprise that so many of the songs I’ve featured over the past three weeks come from my adolescence. I’ll be curious to see if the same holds true for my readers’ lists (which I expect you to post in the comments!).
Of all the songs I’ve written about over the past couple of weeks, today’s SOTD is the first that I remember hearing for the very first time.
In part that’s because it’s the most recent song of the batch, but it’s also due to the tremendous impact it had on me right out of the gate.
Another honorable mention for my list of favorite songs is ‘Angel Eyes,’ the second track on Frank Sinatra’s classic downer of an album, Frank Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely.
Given my penchant for the melancholy, it’s no surprise that this is my favorite Frank Sinatra album (or that my second favorite is the break-up concept record Watertown, which I dissected song-by-song a couple of years ago).
While I’m undoubtedly an album guy, and all of my song picks the past few weeks have come from albums and artists I number among my favorites, here is at least one exception.
I like Dire Straits but I wouldn’t say I’m a Dire Straits fan. I own only two of their albums — Brothers In Arms and Making Movies — and I am drawn more to individual songs than the complete records.
I’ve enjoyed the past two weeks of favorite songs so much that I’m dedicating this week to some honorable mentions.
It’s pretty clear that there are hundreds of songs in the running and one batch could easily replace another depending on my mood. Here are five more that almost made the cut this time around.
