After nearly three weeks of somber Lucinda Williams songs, I owe my readers something more mainstream. So for the next two weeks I’ll present my first 2016 installment of ‘What the Kids are Listening To,’ my quarterly rundown of Billboard’s Hot 100.
It’s been long enough since my last dive into the charts that almost every song in the Top Ten this week is new to the blog.
This is the third song from The Afghan Whigs’ album 1965 to appear on the blog, and the second on a Random Weekend.
1985, released in 1998, is the only Afghan Whigs album I own, and it’s a very good one. In both of those previous SOTD posts I called it out as one of the sexiest records I own and I stand by that assessment.
I’m not sure how I’ve posted seven and a half years worth of Songs of the Day and managed to never feature a track from Prince’s 1987 masterpiece Sign O’ the Times. Today’s Random iTunes Selection remedies that oversight.
I admire Prince’s talent but I’m a casual fan, if that. I own only a few of his albums and rarely listen to them. But Sign O’ the Times is a straight-up classic, with every track across its two discs scoring in its own unique way.

Well, here we are at the final track of Lucinda Williams’ The Ghosts of Highway 20. I know it’s been a tough slog for some of my readers.
Lucinda Williams, like Bob Dylan, is an acquired taste. She reminds me a lot of Dylan, especially in recent years, as her work has moved more towards country blues and even more towards “I don’t give a damn.” She’s not after radio play or big sales — she makes the music she’s moved to make. And her most loyal fans are moved right along with her.
