major_lazer_cold_waterMajor Lazer sits at Billboard’s #3 this week with ‘Cold Water,’ featuring vocals by Justin Bieber and MØ.

The electronic band previously reached the top five with ‘Lean On,’ also featuring MØ. ‘Cold Water’ is a less interesting track than that one, but it’s pleasantly catchy, the latest example of the low-key island vibe that has dominated the charts over the past year.

Song of the Day #3,007: ‘Heathens’ – twenty one pilots

heathens_twenty_one_pilotsIn Billboard’s second spot is ‘Heathens’ , a track by twenty one pilots from the Suicide Squad soundtrack. This is one of two twenty one pilots songs on this week’s top ten.

This is the second twenty one pilots song I’ve featured, following ‘Stressed Out‘ from another Billboard round-up in March. Guess these guys are having a good year.

Song of the Day #3,006: ‘Closer’ – The Chainsmokers feat. Halsey

chainsmokers_closerIt’s time again for my quarterly look at “What the Kids are Listening To!” I will highlight the songs sitting at the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 and decide whether or not I have faith in the future of humanity — or at least humanity’s taste in popular music.

Sitting at #1 this week, as it has for the past three, is ‘Closer,’ by The Chainsmokers featuring Halsey. This is the first #1 song for both acts.

Song of the Day #3,005: ‘Rainin’ You’ – Brad Paisley

Time-Well-WastedHere’s a real tear-jerker from Brad Paisley that falls into one of my favorite categories: Dead or Dumped?

The singer is mourning the loss of a loved one, but is it a death or a break-up? The lyrics favor either interpretation.

So do the YouTube comments, which contain tales of best friends who no longer speak, dumped boyfriends and girlfriends and people who’ve lost members of their family.

Song of the Day #3,004: ‘Get Me Out of Here’ – Billy Pilgrim

billy_pilgrimI was surprised to discover that through 3,003 Songs of the Day (or 2,083 if you’re going to nitpick… and I’m still digging in to see where those missed numbers came from), I have never featured a track by Billy Pilgrim.

Granted, the band Billy Pilgrim isn’t a household name by any means, but I have enough affection for their debut album that I would have expected them to surface at least once over eight years. Alas, no.
