Song of the Day #3,178: ‘Everything Flows’ – Teenage Fanclub

Wrapping up my look at the music of 1990, here’s Teenage Fanclub with their debut album, A Catholic Education.

The Scottish alternative band would morph into more of a power pop band on subsequent releases, but this album sounds like an early grunge record. I’m guessing I’d prefer their later work.

‘Everything Flows,’ one of the band’s most celebrated tracks, sounds like (to paraphrase Ben Folds) hard rock for sissies. I like it.

I was left pretty cold by most of the 1990 albums I featured. The sound of the 80s turning into the 90s was chaotic and dissonant, perhaps an ironic response to Ronald Reagan’s “morning in America.” In a few weeks I’ll jump ahead another decade and focus on the albums of 2000. We’ll see what eight years of Bill Clinton meant for popular music.

You get older every year
But you don’t change
Or I don’t notice you’re changing
I think about it every day
But only for a little while
And then the feeling

I’ll never know which way to flow
Set a course that I don’t know
I’ll never know which way to flow
Set a course that I don’t know

The wind’s blowing in my face
Lately find it hard to keep the pace
And I’m looking for a place to go
But only for a little while
And then the feeling

I’ll never know which way to flow
Set a course that I don’t know
I’ll never know which way to flow
Set a course that I don’t know

  1. Dana says:

Is it me, or if you stripped this song down a bit, it could be a Beck song?

Anyway, thanks for the 1990 review. Looking forward to 2000.
