The recent reelection of President Barack Obama has eaten away at my time, both personally and professionally, to a degree that has endangered my ability to post a new song each day.
I’m actually writing day to day right now, rather than having a week or so worth of blog entries built up as I usually do.
I can’t decide what I think of Sheryl Crow. At one point I really liked her music — particularly the Globe Sessions album, which I find strong start to finish — but later I soured on her.
I sometimes detect something inauthentic and sterile in her music, a safeness and blandness that turns me off. But at other times I buy her as the rootsy rock babe she’s always tried to be.
Here’s a song from TV On the Radio’s great album Dear Science that tends to get lost in the mix.
‘Stork & Owl’ doesn’t have an easy groove like many of its counterparts. While most of the album is avant garde poetry that passes for dance music, this is avant garde poetry that sounds like exactly that.
I know even less about Wang Chung than any of the other bands I’ve featured this week. ‘Everybody Have Fun Tonight’ is the only song of theirs I can name off the top of my head.
I had no idea that ‘Dance Hall Days,’ a song I really like, was performed by these British New Wavers. Good for them.
For just about every band I’m featuring this week, I can name a maximum of three songs off the top of my head but after that I’m at a loss.
For Blondie, it’s ‘Call Me,’ ‘Heart of Glass’ and ‘The Tide is High.’ I’d probably recognize a couple of others if you played them for me, but I sure can’t come up with them on my own.
