Song of the Day #1,584: ‘Penny Lane’ – Elvis Costello

The recent reelection of President Barack Obama has eaten away at my time, both personally and professionally, to a degree that has endangered my ability to post a new song each day.

I’m actually writing day to day right now, rather than having a week or so worth of blog entries built up as I usually do.

So in order to get back on track, and preserve my sanity, I’m going to look to Mr. Obama for some help. This week I’ll post a series of musical performances — without commentary — at his White House over the past four years.

I actually watched this concert, as it taped automatically on my DVR due to costello’s inclusion in the lineup. I enjoyed, though Maddie was less than impressed.😄 She’ s not big on Elvis’ voice, particularly when he is taking on the Beatles.

Meanwhile, how nerve wracking, but cool, must it be to perform before the leader of the free world?

  2. Shawn says:

Very respectable version from Costello, it takes courage to perform any Beatles song createed after ’65 or ’66. I hadn’t heard it before this post. Thought from the start he was going to leave out the horns altogether, but its the White House and they love the military out there. A wailing guitar solo would’ve been nice, or how about a harmonica?

Great idea. It’s interesting to think about what the musical performances that take place in the White House during a particular President’s tenure says about that President, or the country, during that time. How would you like to get a ticket to this show?!
