My first Lucinda Williams album was 1998’s Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, which I bought after reading voluminous praise and promptly put back on the shelf after a cursory listen.
A year later I stumbled upon her self-titled 1988 album and was instantly smitten. That sent me back to Car Wheels, which I realized was a bona fide masterpiece. Sweet Old World (1992) proved to be another excellent release, as did her next two albums, 2001’s Essence and 2003’s World Without Tears.
Williams has a gift for evoking a time and place that she shares with the great Southern novelists. And she marries it with gorgeously gritty musicianship. You feel her music more than hear it.
Her later output is a bit spotty, and her voice began to fail her along the way, but Williams still delivers a gem every now and again. And that initial five-album span is sublime.
