Song of the Day #4,409: ‘Rebel Sun’ – Beach Weather

Beach Weather was a short-lived project by singer-songwriter Nick Santino, who has also helmed the band A Rocket to the Moon and performed as a solo act.

Santino joined Austin Scates and Reeve Powers to form Beach Weather in 2015. The Massachusetts-based outfit released three well-liked EPs then called it quits in 2017 so the members could pursue solo projects.

Song of the Day #4,408: ‘All I’ve Got’ – Modern Nomad

Modern Nomad is one of the more obscure artists Sophia has brought to my attention. They have no Wikipedia page and precious few mentions in the press. Their YouTube videos have only a couple of thousand views, when even minor artists seem to have no problem breaking a million.

In fact, Googling “Modern Nomad” brings up a home goods store in Denver and a blog by a dude in London who hasn’t posted a new entry since 2015.

Song of the Day #4,407: ‘If You Want To’ – Beabadoobee

Sophia has a definite interest in Gen Z women musical artists. I’ll be featuring a handful of her finds over the next couple of weeks, and leaving out a few of the more high-profile ones (including Gracie Abrams and Noah Cyrus).

It was Sophia who first brought Billie Eilish to my attention, a full year and a half before the now-superstar released her Grammy-sweeping first album. So I keep a close eye on the young artists she unearths.

Song of the Day #4,406: ‘White Light’ – Real Estate

I served up two weeks of songs discovered by my younger daughter, Fiona, and now it’s my older daughter’s turn.

If I had to sum up Sophia’s musical taste in a word, it would be “gentle.” She went through a rap phrase a few years ago, and still finds time for an occasional Megan Thee Stallion song or the like, but she gravitates toward acoustic, melodic songs. When she’s not unearthing new artists, the “oldies” she favors are John Mayer, Eagles, Josh Rouse and Fleetwood Mac. She’s also a big Taylor Swift fan, and shares her dad’s love of Miranda Lambert.

Song of the Day #4,405: ‘Cardigan’ – Taylor Swift

By some cosmic coincidence, I had a Taylor Swift song scheduled yesterday as a Random Weekend selection. It’s a coincidence because, as the world knows by now, Swift dropped a surprise album — folklore — just a day earlier.

The random song was ‘Sad Tragic Beautiful’ from the 2012 album Red, and I did not have kind things to say about it. In fact, I called it her worst song.

Keeping that post up in light of Swift’s new album release felt particularly tone deaf, so I shuffled some things around.
