I’ve now written about all but two of Linda Ronstadt’s 31 studio albums, and I thought the final two would group together nicely at the end.
First up is the oddest recording of her career, 1996’s Dedicated to the One I Love. This is a collection of rock songs performed in the style of children’s lullabies. If you’ve ever wanted to hear Queen’s ‘We Will Rock You’ sung against the backdrop of a crib mobile, this is the album for you.
It’s actually a sweet idea, and it predates the popular Baby Mozart/Baby Vivaldi craze by a few years, making Ronstadt ahead of her time when it comes to soothing children to the classics. Songs by The Beach Boys, The Beatles, and The Ronettes prove to be well suited to this format.
But unless you have young children, you probably won’t find much time for this album. It did land her another Grammy, though, and gave her another Billboard milestone when it topped the Kid Audio chart.
Finally, like seemingly every recording artist in the world, Ronstadt released a Christmas album. A Merry Little Christmas came out in October of 2000. It kicks off with a half-dozen traditional classics (‘The Christmas Song,’ ‘White Christmas,’ etc.) before taking a detour in its back half to feature choral renditions of traditional carols. The second section features beautiful vocals by Ronstadt and her supporting choir.
Perhaps the loveliest track is a recording of Joni Mitchell’s ‘River,’ which marked the first time that classic was included on a Christmas album.
They’re cutting down trees
They’re putting up reindeer
And singing songs of joy and peace
Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on
But it don’t snow here
It stays pretty green
I’m going to make a lot of money
Then I’m going to quit this crazy scene
Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on
I wish I had a river so long
I would teach my feet to fly
Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on
I made my baby cry
He tried hard to help me
You know, he put me at ease
And he loved me so naughty
Made me weak in the knees
I wish I had a river I could skate away on
I’m so hard to handle
I’m selfish, and I’m sad
Now I’ve gone and lost the best baby
That I ever had
I wish I had a river I could skate away on
I wish I had a river so long
I would teach my feet to fly
Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on
I made my baby say goodbye
It’s coming on Christmas
They’re cutting down trees
They’re putting up reindeer
And singing songs of joy and peace
I wish I had a river I could skate away on
