Song of the Day #6,562: ‘If I Should Fall Behind’ – Linda Ronstadt

Linda Ronstadt followed the excellent Winter Light with 1995’s Feels Like Home, a return to her country rock roots.

The album included a handful of tracks first recorded with Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris for their initially abandoned second collaborative album. They would appear in remixed form on the Trio II album four years later.

Those tracks include a cover of Neil Young’s ‘After the Gold Rush’ and Randy Newman’s ‘Feels Like Home,’ two standouts that feel redundant on one album or the other depending on which you know better.

Among the rest of the songs, the most notable are a take on Tom Petty’s ‘The Waiting’ and a rollicking track called ‘Walk On’ that reached the country charts.

Ronstadt’s last studio album of contemporary material was 1998’s We Ran, a more rock-oriented record featuring songs by John Hiatt, Doc Pomus, Bob Dylan, and Bruce Springsteen. Based on sales, this is one of the least successful album in her career, which is a shame because it’s quite good.

It’s a great cycle of lesser known songs, with the exception of a terrific rendition of Dylan’s ‘Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues.’ One of Ronstadt’s greatest gifts is her taste in material. Today’s SOTD, a beautiful love song by Bruce Springsteen, is a great example.

[Verse 1]
We said we’d walk together, baby, come what may
That come the twilight, should we lose our way
If as we’re walking hands should slip free

[Refrain]
I’ll wait for you
Should I fall behind, wait for me

[Verse 2]
We swore we’d travel, darling, side by side
And we’d help each other stay in stride
But each lover’s steps fall so differently

[Refrain]
So I’ll wait for you
Should I fall behind, wait for me

[Bridge]
Now everyone dreams of love lasting and true
But you and I know what this world can do
Let’s make our steps clear that the other may see

[Refrain]
And I’ll wait for you
Should I fall behind, wait for me

[Verse 3]
Now there’s a beautiful river in the valley ahead
And there ‘neath the oak’s bough soon we’ll be wed
But should we lose each other in the shadow of the evening trees

[Refrain]
I’ll wait for you
Should I fall behind, wait for me
Darling, I’ll wait for you
Should I fall behind, wait for me
Darling, I’ll wait for you
