Song of the Day #6,530: ‘Love Hangover’ – Diana Ross

Throwing back to the week of May 23, 1976, we find Diana Ross atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Love Hangover,’ the third single from her self-titled soul album released in February of that year.

The first single, which also reached #1, was ‘Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where You’re Going To),’ a Best Song Oscar nominee the previous year.

This epic, which clocks in at nearly eight minutes, shifts from a soulful ballad to a disco jam about a third of the way through. It served as a metaphor for Ross’ career, which also shifted abruptly to meet the disco moment.

Vocal group the 5th Dimension released their own abridged version of the song the same week as Ross, but saw it languish at the bottom of the chart. It was their last song to enter the Hot 100.

Part I

If there’s a cure for this
I don’t want it
I don’t want it

If there’s a cure for this
I don’t want it
I don’t want it

I think about it all the time
Thinking only makes me smile
And say, hey

I don’t wanna shake it
I love the love you’re making

If there’s a cure for this
I don’t want it
I don’t want it

If there’s a remedy
I’ll run from it
From it

I think about it all the time
Never let it out of my mind
‘Cause I love you

I’ve got the sweetest hangover
I don’t wanna get over
The sweetest hangover

Yeah

I don’t wanna get over
(Sweet love)
(Sweet love)

(I don’t want a cure for this)
(I don’t want a cure for this, ha)
(I don’t want a cure for this)
(I don’t want a cure for this, ha)
(I don’t want a cure for this)
(I don’t want a cure, I don’t want a cure for this)

I’ve got the sweetest hangover
Sweetest hangover
Yeah
(I don’t wanna get over)
(I don’t wanna get, I don’t wanna get)
(Over)
