Song of the Day #5,428: ‘Someone Saved My Life Tonight’ – Elton John

Continuing my look at the albums of 1975…

I did an Elton John deep dive a few years ago after watching the movie Rocketman. I listened to most of his albums but skipped a stretch between 1974 and 1983 that includes his work without lyricist Bernie Taupin and several releases widely considered his worst.

I gave a cursory listen to 1975’s Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy but in retrospect should have given it more time. It is purportedly John’s own favorite of his albums, and having given it a few spins myself now, I’m a fan.

This is a concept album about the early days of John and Taupin (John is Captain Fantastic, while Taupin is the Brown Dirt Cowboy). That subject matter is hard to discern at times, given Taupin’s typical lyrical weirdness, but on some tracks it’s quite apparent.

On the track ‘Bitter Fingers,’ John sings about the duo’s desire to write more challenging music: “Those old die-hards in Denmark Street start laughing at the keyboard player’s hollow haunted eyes / It seems to me a change is really needed / I’m sick of tra-la-las and la-de-das .” ‘Meal Ticket’ is a jealous screed about those who’d already found success.

And ‘Writing’ is a charming look at the “two rooms” songwriting process that made John into one of the most popular musical artists of all time.

The album’s best song, and only single, is ‘Someone Saved My Life Tonight.’ The emotional epic chronicles John’s near-marriage to Linda Woodrow and subsequent suicide attempt. John’s friend, singer Long John Baldry, convinced him to break off the engagement for the sake of his career and personal happiness.

That song reached #4 on the Hot 100, while Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy became the first album to debut at #1 on the Billboard 200. It was the fifth of six consecutive John albums to reach #1 between 1972 and 1975. The sixth was Rock of the Westies, a 1975 release that I won’t get to during this installment of Decades.

[Verse 1]
When I think of those East End lights, muggy nights
The curtains drawn in the little room downstairs
Prima Donna, lord, you really shoulda been there
Sittin’ like a princess perched in her electric chair
And it’s one more beer, and I don’t hear you anymore
We’ve all gone crazy lately
My friend’s out there, rollin’ ’round the basement floor (Ooh)

[Chorus]
And someone saved my life tonight, sugar bear (sugar bear)
You almost had your hooks in me, didn’t you, dear?
You nearly had me roped and tied
Altar-bound, hypnotized, sweet freedom whispered in my ear
You’re a butterfly, and butterflies are free to fly
Fly away, high away, bye-bye (Ooh)

[Verse 2]
I never realized the passin’ hours of evening showers
A slip noose hangin’ in my darkest dreams
I’m strangled by your haunted social scene
Just a pawn out-played by a dominating queen
It’s four o’clock in the morning, damn it! Listen to me good
I’m sleepin’ with myself tonight
Saved in time, thank God my music’s still alive
(Oh!)

[Chorus]
Someone saved my life tonight, sugar bear
(Sugar bear, sugar bear)
You almost had your hooks in me, didn’t you, dear?
You nearly had me roped and tied
Altar-bound, hypnotized, sweet freedom whispered in my ear
You’re a butterfly, and butterflies are free to fly
Fly away, high away, bye-bye (Ooh)

[Piano riff]

[Bridge]
And I would’ve walked head-on into the deep end of the river
Clingin’ to your stocks and bonds
Payin’ your H.P. demands forever
They’re comin’ in the mornin’ with a truck to take me home
Someone saved my life tonight
Someone saved my life tonight
Someone saved my life tonight
Someone saved my life tonight
Someone saved my life tonight
So save your strength, and run the field you play alone

[Chorus]
Someone saved my life tonight, sugar bear
(Sugar bear, sugar bear, sugar bear)
You almost had your hooks in me, didn’t you, dear?
You nearly had me roped and tied
Altar-bound, hypnotized, sweet freedom whispered in my ear
You’re a butterfly, and butterflies are free to fly
Fly away, high away, bye-bye

[Outro]
Someone saved, someone saved, someone saved my life tonight
(Someone saved my life tonight)
Someone saved, someone saved, someone saved my life tonight
(Someone saved my life tonight)

While I certainly know today’s song, I’m not sure I’ve ever heard anything else from this album. I may have to give it a spin myself.

Meanwhile, I wonder how much Elton being gay factored into the discussion about not marrying a woman and his consideration of suicide.

  2. Amy says:

I didn’t realize John had albums of songs that don’t feature Bernie though clearly this isn’t one of them. I think of them as a unit. I, too, have never heard (of!) this album.

  3. Andrea Katz says:

The 1970 Elton John album is my first and my favorite. Although there were subsequent songs I really loved.
