As I continue my ‘Decades’ look back at the year 1975, this week I’ll focus on five albums I’ve heard but don’t know well. The two weeks after that will be reserved for albums I’ve never heard in their entirety.
Olivia Newton-John’s Have You Never Been Mellow was the fifth studio album by the British-Australian chanteuse and her first non-compilation album to reach #1 (If You Love Me, Let Me Know, featuring hits from her first three releases, had reached the top spot a year before).
This country-pop album produced two #1 hits of its only singles, the title track and today’s SOTD. I’m a huge fan of ‘Have You Never Been Mellow’ (another banger by John Farrar, who wrote so many great songs for Newton-John). ‘Please Mr. Please’ is a sweetly sad country bop with an undeniably catchy chorus.
The rest of the album goes down just as easy. Newton-John is an excellent vocalist, wrapping her delightful soprano around a solid collection of songs. Among my favorites are ‘The Air That I Breathe’ (a supple cover of The Hollies’ classic), the soulful ‘Water Under the Bridge,’ and the hopeful love song ‘Follow Me.’
I have such warm feelings about Newton-John, especially in light of her recent passing, that an album this lovely and generous can’t help but make a major impression.
In the corner of the bar there stands a jukebox
With the best of country music, old and new
You can hear your five selections for a quarter
And somebody else’s songs when yours are through
[Verse 2]
I got good Kentucky whiskey on the counter
And my friends around to help me ease the pain
‘Til some button-pushing cowboy plays that love song
And here I am, just missing you again
[Chorus]
Please, mister, please, don’t play B-17
It was our song, it was his song but it’s over
Please, mister, please, if you know what I mean
I don’t ever wanna hear that song again
[Verse 3]
If I had a dime for every time I held you
Though you’re far away, you’ve been so close to me
I could swear I’d be the richest girl in Nashville
Maybe even in the state of Tennessee
[Verse 4]
But I guess I’d better get myself together
‘Cause when you left, you didn’t leave too much behind
Just a note that said “I’m sorry” by your picture
And a song that’s weighing heavy on my mind
[Chorus]
Please, mister, please, don’t play B-17
It was our song, it was his song but it’s over
Please, mister, please, if you know what I mean
I don’t ever wanna hear that song again
I’m not sure the song “Have You Never Been Mellow” has ever been described as a “banger” before.🤣
Loved Olivia and one of her albums is the first I recall buying on my own, but it was a later album. Still. This one is a gem.
