A couple of weeks ago, I joked that I would put Random Weekends on hiatus and return to the controversial Ron Sexsmith Weekends of yesteryear.
But the more I thought about it, I couldn’t understand why weekends dedicated to a talented, thoughtful singer-songwriter should be a laugh-worthy concept. Sexsmith is an undeniably great songwriter, one held in high esteem by fellow artists even as he toils in relative obscurity commercially. He is exactly the sort of performer who deserves a wider platform.
He is also prolific. Since my last Sexsmith Weekend post, he has released five studio albums and appeared as a featured artist on several other releases. A return to Sexsmith Weekends wouldn’t run a decade, but I can easily get three to four months out of his new material alone.
So buckle up, haters, because your favorite sensitive Canadian tunesmith is back for round two, which I will call “Sexsmith Weekends II: The Return of Ron Sexsmith.”
I will start with Ron’s most recent release, this year’s The Vivian Line, and work back to 2013’s Forever Endeavour, before jumping to his 1991 debut and covering his discography chronologically from there.
Also, Happy April Fools’ Day!
(I do think Sexsmith deserves more respect than this post suggests… but I couldn’t resist.)
As new as the morning
It sparkled like the dew
Of the new day dawning
Little did we know
We were old souls from the start
For though our love was new
It was ancient in our hearts
When our love was born
And a new life was beginning
Our kisses they were warm
Our eyes how they’d glisten
Nothing much to say
It was always meant to be
Though our love was newly born
Other lifetimes had it seen
Spirits swirl around
And twirl around
Until they find a home
I turned around
You turned around
Until the time had flown
When our love was young
As young as the springtime
We were always on the run
Now it slows to a sweet time
Little did we know
We were old souls from the start
Although our love was young
It was ancient in our hearts
For though our love was new
It was ancient in our hearts
Nice attempt, but I saw this April 1st joke coming a mile away!
🤣 Hahahaha And Happy April Fools Day to you
Phew
