Last Sunday, I asked for thoughts on how to proceed with weekend posts as Random Weekends passes its 11th anniversary.
The consensus was nearly unanimous: a return to Ron Sexsmith Weekends. Stay tuned next week for a deep dive into his earlier, unreleased material.
All kidding aside, so far I’ve heard suggestions to keep things as they are, to serve up a ‘classic rewind’ feature, or to limit the random selections to new artists rather than music already in my collection.
While deciding how to proceed, I have to keep the trains running on time so I am sticking with the usual Random Weekend format for now. Stay tuned for what comes next.
In the meantime, today’s random selection is a great example of the pitfalls of the Random iTunes Fairy. ‘Never Again’ is the maudlin final track on Justin Timberlake’s 2002 solo debut Justified. Presumably written about Timberlake’s break-up with Britney Spears, this song is a strong rebuttal to the idea that heartbreak leads to good music.
Would have given up my life for you
Guess it’s true what they say about love, it’s blind
Girl, you lied straight to my face, looking in my eyes
And I believed you ’cause I loved you more than life
And all you had to do
Was apologize
[Chorus]
You didn’t say you’re sorry
I don’t understand
You don’t care that you hurt me
And now I’m half the man
That I used to be when it was you and me
You didn’t love me enough
My heart may never mend
And you’ll never get to love me again
No, no, no, no, no, no
[Verse 2]
Sadness has me at the end of the line
Helpless, watched you break this heart of mine
And loneliness only wants you back here with me
Common sense knows that you’re not good enough for me
And all you had to do
Was apologize and mean it
[Chorus]
But you didn’t say you’re sorry
I don’t understand
You don’t care that you hurt me
And now I’m half the man
That I used to be when it was you and me
You didn’t love me enough
My heart may never mend
And you’ll never get to love me
[Bridge]
Wish like hell I could go back in time
Maybe then, I could see how
Forgiveness says that I should give you one more try
But it’s too late, it’s over now
Ayy, ooh
[Chorus]
You didn’t say you’re sorry
And I don’t understand
You don’t care that you hurt me
And now I’m half the man
That I used to be when it was you and me
You didn’t love me enough
My heart may never mend
And you’ll never get to love me
Again, yeah
[Outro]
Again, yeah, yeah
Again, again, again, yeah, yeah, yeah
Never get to love me
LOL on your final statement 😂
I get that the lyrics are a bit too on the nose, but I think you are being a bit harsh to Justin!
