Song of the Day #5,374: ‘Yosemite’ – Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey had a tough act to follow after the orgasmic reception to Norman Fucking Rockwell and she responded to the challenge by delivering her quietest and most personal record yet. 2021’s Chemtrails Over the Country Club strips away any hints of modern pop present in its predecessor and doubles down on the atmospheric folk.

Some fans decried the continued move away from the trip-hop trappings of her early work, somehow unsatisfied with the bounty of beautiful songs Del Rey was delivering. I’ll take gorgeous acoustic melancholy any day over just about anything else, so this album is right in my sweet spot.

Chemtrails finds Del Rey in a much more peaceful and contemplative place than the glamorous femme fatale of her earlier work. She sings about love, family, and friendship, as well as her increasing disillusionment with the music industry.

As the album’s cover art suggests, she finds solace in her friends, and invites several of them to collaborate on the album. Country singer Nikki Lane co-writes and performs on one track, and the album’s closer is a lovely cover of Joni Mitchell’s ‘For Free’ on which Del Rey shares verses with singers Zella Day and Weyes Blood.

This Laurel Canyon lovefest feels like it’s been beamed in from another plane of existence. Del Rey basks in the iconography of 50s Americana and the music of 70s California, and filters all that through her modern mindset to arrive at something deliriously out of time.

With each new release, I’m more convinced that she is not only one of my favorite artists ever but a once-in-a-generation talent whose cultural significance won’t be fully realized any time soon.

[Verse 1]
Seasons may change
But we won’t change
Isn’t it sweet how we know that already?
Winter to spring
Spring back to fall
Isn’t it cool how nothing here changes at all?

[Pre-Chorus]
You make me feel I’m invincible
Just like I wanted
No more candle in the wind
It’s not like I’m invisible
Not like before when I was burning at both ends

[Chorus]
We did it for fun, we did it for free
I did it for you, you did it for me
We did it for the right reasons
We did it for the right reasons

[Verse 2]
Seasons may change
But we won’t change
Isn’t it strange how different we are from all of our friends?
Seasons will turn
The world, it will turn
The only thing we’ll turn is the pages of all of the poems we burned

[Pre-Chorus]
Honey, you made me feel I’m invincible
It’s just like I wanted
No more candle in the wind
It’s not like I’m invisible
Like I was before, no more burning at both ends

[Chorus]
Now I do it for fun, I do it for free
I do it for you, you did it for me
We did it for the right reasons
We did it for the right reasons

[Bridge]
I remember watching How Green Was My Valley
Then I was thinking
“How deep was the canyon that you came from?”
Television static was quite overwhelming
Was it because of the cabin and the candles in the wind?

[Chorus]
We’ve done it for fun, we’ve done it for free
I showed up for you, you showed up for me
We did it for the right reasons
We did it for fun, we did it for free

[Outro]
When I was young ’til eternity
I’ll do it for the right reasons
Withstanding all the time, changes, and seasons
Right reasons

Your confession that you’ll “take gorgeous acoustic melancholy any day over just about anything else” picks up on my observation from a few days ago. For me, a little atmospheric melancholy goes a long way and doesn’t really sustain my interest for an entire album, let alone repeat listening.

I owe this album another spin – I do love the way Lana is able to set a vibe
