Today’s random selection is a cut from the 11th volume of Bob Dylan’s Bootleg Series, this one dedicated to the Basement Tapes album he recorded with The Band in 1967. Those recordings didn’t see an official release until 1975, a span that saw Dylan release eight other albums.

While the final album featured 16 songs from those 1967 recordings, along with eight more recorded by The Band in the ensuing years, there was a wealth of other material committed to tape during those sessions. Bootlegs of those songs have been passed around by fans ever since.

The Basement Tapes Bootleg Series collection compiles all of that material in one place for the first time. Spanning six discs and 138 tracks, it is an exhaustive record of the historic sessions — maybe better suited for a museum than a stereo system.

I own an abridged version of that collection, called The Basement Tapes Raw, which culls down those 138 tracks to a 2-disc, 38-song highlight package. Many of the tracks (like today’s SOTD) are simply alternate versions of songs that ended up on the official Basement Tapes release, so it isn’t all that revelatory (unlike most of the other Bootleg Series releases).
