Hailee Steinfeld has quietly put together one of the most interesting careers among her peers in young Hollywood. The 25-year-old actress and singer has established herself in movies, TV, and on the music charts, a rare feat for performers of any age.
Steinfeld received an Academy Award nomination at age 14 for her stunning debut in the Coen Brothers’ True Grit. She followed that success with impressive turns in more than a dozen films, including The Edge of Seventeen, Bumblebee and the Pitch Perfect movies. On the small screen, she is a Peabody winner for her work as the titular character in Apple TV+’s Dickinson and recently starred in the Marvel series Hawkeye.
Steinfeld’s music career has been less celebrated, but she has placed five songs on the Billboard Hot 100 and has two EPs under her belt.
A model for Steinfeld’s career is 30-year-old Selena Gomez, who turned a childhood television career into a big-time music career, with a number of movie appearances along the way and now a starring role in the hit TV show Only Murders in the Building. Steinfeld is a bit ahead on the film front, but has a long way to go to match Gomez’s recording success.
To that end, she recently released the summery ‘Coast,’ a collaboration with Anderson .Paak. I don’t know if this song will prove to be the big hit Steinfeld has been chasing, but it’s a very nice listen.
Personally, I’d be happy if she concentrated on her film work. It’s been four years since Bumblebee, with only a couple of cameos since then. I’m sure her TV shows keep her busy, but she has the chops to be a major movie star.
Coast
[Verse 1: Hailee Steinfeld]
You’re the wave upon my ocean
Poundin’ rhythm and motion
It’s a full moon kind of night, yeah
I don’t wanna go home yet
You can question my devotion
Wear my heart on my shoulder
Just relax and let the riptide pull you close
[Chorus: Hailee Steinfeld & Anderson .Paak]
(Ah-ah-ah-ah)
Baby, all I wanna do is coast (Coast)
With you (With you)
Energy, the body flows
(Ah-ah-ah-ah) (Hey, hey)
Baby, all I wanna do is coast (Coast)
With you (With you)
Frequency of all we know (Yeah)
[Verse 2: Anderson .Paak]
Feelin’ like I caught a wave with ya
I been dealin’ with a lot of changes
And all the people that I like to hang with
They all been sayin’ that I ain’t the same
Listen, I been chillin’ with you for a couple days
If you ain’t afraid, me and you should rage (Hey)
In the Sun rays, come on out the cage (Hey, hey)
Don’t wanna tame, live it your way (Hey)
Body go for days, got me in a daze (Hey, hey)
Parties in LA feel like holidays (Hey)
Hit the PCH and we on our way
To a place I was born and raised
You live on the screen and the stage
I wanna fit in between your legs
Let’s pick a day, everything could wait
Words can’t relay, but it’s givin’ fate
[Chorus: Hailee Steinfeld & Anderson .Paak]
(Ah-ah-ah-ah)
Baby, all I wanna do is coast (Coast)
With you (With you)
Energy, the body flows
(Ah-ah-ah-ah) (Hey, hey)
Baby, all I wanna do is coast (Coast)
With you (With you)
Frequency of all we know
[Post-Chorus: Hailee Steinfeld & Anderson .Paak]
‘Cause nothin’ feels as real when we’re connected
Relax and let the riptide pull you close
(Ah-ah-ah-ah)
Baby, all I wanna do is coast (Coast)
With you (With you)
Frequency of all we know
[Bridge: Hailee Steinfeld & Anderson .Paak]
The stars come down, you drown ’em out
I’m sinkin’ deeper into you
I breathe you in, I breathe you out
I’m sinkin’ deeper into (Hey)
[Chorus: Hailee Steinfeld & Anderson .Paak]
(Ah-ah-ah-ah)
Baby, all I wanna do is coast (Coast)
With you (With you)
Energy, the body flows (We could cruise if the mood’s right)
(Ah-ah-ah-ah) (Catch a wave in the moonlight)
Baby, all I wanna do is coast (Coast)
With you (With you)
Frequency of all we know
[Post-Chorus: Hailee Steinfeld & Anderson .Paak]
‘Cause nothin’ feels as real when we’re connected (Coast)
Relax and let the riptide pull you close
(Ah-ah-ah-ah)
Baby, all I wanna do is coast (Coast)
With you (With you)
Frequency of all we know
She is definitely talented, and I look forward to the next time she graces either the big or small screen.
She has quite an impressive history for her young age. I never followed Selena Gomez. But I’m loving her in Murders in the Building
