Song of the Day #5,148: ‘Carey (Live)’ – Joni Mitchell

The New York Times

A couple of weeks ago, 78-year-old Joni Mitchell made a triumphant return to the stage, performing in public for the first time since suffering a brain aneurysm in 2015.

The set took place at the Newport Folk Festival, where Mitchell last appeared way back in 1969, and featured Mitchell’s friend and collaborator Brandi Carlile along with a host of other musicians.

This week, I’ll feature five clips from the historic show.

First up is the ‘Carey,’ which opened the set. It’s great to see Mitchell walk out and take her seat, touched by the audience’s response, but the actual performance suggests she might be more of a spectator for this show. She sings along but seems a little lost.

Over the next few clips, you’ll watch her grow more comfortable and confident with each song.

This was such an astonishing event. Joni’s courage, perseverance and innate talent cannot be suppressed.

Such a wonderful musical moment watching her ❤️

  3. Amy says:

I’m late to the party but wanted to catch up. I’ve watched and teared up through the “Both Sides Now” performance several times but hadn’t seen the rest of these. Seeing her supporting role in this song makes Brandi’s delight (and surprise) at how much she commands “Both Sides Now” all the more understandable. Love that you’re devoting a week to Joni’s unexpected and oh so moving return to the stage.
