Of all the songs I’m featuring this week and last, Sinead O’Connor’s ‘Mandinka’ is the one I most hope shows up in the next season of Stranger Things.
Like Kate Bush, O’Connor is a unique talent who broke ground for women in rock and recorded music unlike anything else being released at the time. She has had a troubled life and career since her success in the late 80s/early 90s and deserves another moment in the spotlight.
‘Mandinka’ is a fiery pop song that showcases O’Connor’s incredible vocals and strikes a mysterious tone that’s a good match for Stranger Things.
And given that the show’s Max Mayfield (portrayed by Sadie Sink) is a big Kate Bush fan, I find it likely she’d also gravitate toward Sinead O’Connor.
I’m dancing the seven veils
Want you to pick up my scarf
See how the black moon fades
Soon I can give you my heart
[Chorus]
I don’t know no shame
I feel no pain
I can’t see the flame
But I do know Man-din-ka
I do know Man-din-ka
I do know Man-din-ka
I do
[Verse 2]
They’re throwing it all this way
Dragging it back to the start
And they say, “See how the glass is raised?”
I have refused to take part
I told them “drink something new”
Please let me pull something through
[Chorus]
I don’t know no shame
I feel no pain
I can’t see the flame
But I do know Man-din-ka
I do know Man-din-ka
I do know Man-din-ka
I do
[Outro]
Soon I can give you my heart
I swear I do
Soon I can give you my heart
I do
Mandinka
Soon I can give you my heart
Soon I can give you my heart
Soon I can give you my heart
It will be interesting to see if any of your predictions come true.
